Culinary Art’s Cupcake Wars

Teachers were chosen to score on a rubric 16-18 cupcakes on the basis of advertising, presentation, and flavor. The students really did show and prove their cooking skills. The cupcakes turned out looking unique as well as tasting fantastic!  Stayed tuned to find out who the winning team is!

Paz Receives Bronze Medal at ISWEEEP

Griffin High’s own Jeramie Paz participated in the Engineering category for ISWEEEP or International Sustainable World Energy Engineering Environment Project Olympiad in Houston, TX  May 1st through May 5th. There were over 385 highly qualified projects from 66 different countries and 44 states displayed at the George R. Brown convention center. Participants enjoyed the opportunity to meet with their friends from different parts of the world while seeing that they are not the only ones who committed to find solutions to globe’s problems.

Jeramie received a bronze medal for his project “Solar-Powered Thermal Conductive Warmer for Preterm Neonates in Resource-Limited Environment.”   There were only 25 bronze medals awarded in the Engineering category.  Congratulations to Jeramie for a job well done!!

Alexis Dalton Wins T-Shirt Design Contest

Congratulations to Alexis Dalton, GHS 9th grader, on her winning T-shirt design for the Griffin Stream Cleanup Art contest.
Alexis’s design was printed on all the shirts volunteers and organizers for the city of griffin were given. She won a T-shirt with her artwork, a cash prize, and a pizza party for her class.   Today, Mrs. Robinson from the 4-H organization and Mrs. Daniels from the City of Griffin came and presented Alexis with her prizes.

Jeramie Paz, ninth grader at GHS, won second honors at the 2014 Georgia Science and Engineering Fair that was held at the Classic Center in Athens, GA on March 28-29!

SkillsUSA State Competition

SkillsUSA State Competition, Ronnie Ross 1st Place Gold Metal Winner, Electrical Construction Wiring.  Ross will compete in the National Leadership and Skills Conference, Monday, June 23 – Saturday, June 28, 2014 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Daniel Girvin competed in Masonry, and Richard Carr competed in Plumbing.  They did not place, but they did an outstanding job representing Griffin High School.

Special thanks to the teachers, parents, administrators, Debbie Christian, Ashley Crawford, and Justin Anderson (Advisory Board Member).  I would also like to thank all the people Ross work with in the Work Base Learning program.

Humayun & Kirkland Win State CERT Competition

One of Griffin’s  HOSA Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) placed 2nd at the HOSA State Competition held March 6-8 in Athens, GA! Congratulations to Fatima Humayun and Kellie Kirkland who qualified to compete at the HOSA National Leadership Conference June 25 – 28 in Orlando, Florida!

We also applaud our 20 region winners who competed and did a great job representing Griffin High.

Riordan & Holmes Win at Regional YGA Writing Competition

The Georgia Council of Teachers of English (GCTE) has a yearly Young Georgia Authors (YGA) competition.  The “competition is to encourage students to develop enthusiasm for and expertise in their writing, to provide a context to celebrate their writing successes, and to recognize student achievement in arts and academics.” (More information can be found here on the GCTE website).  We are proud of Rachel Riordan and Mary Holmes for representing GHS well and winning at the regional competition! Their writings will move onto state level, with the results being released in June.

Students Place in GA Poetry Contest

Griffin High students participated in a poetry contest put on by the Georgia Poetry Society.  The Marel Brown Prize is a two-tier contest with prizes awarded annually by the Georgia Poetry Society for poetic achievement by students grades 6-8 and grades 9-12.  For more information check their site here.

There were 152 entries statewide and Griffin High had two students recognized! school had more than one student recognized.  Victoria Starr won 1st place Honorable Mention and Dequarius Cleveland won 4th place Honorable Mention.  Congratulations!  Here is the published list of the winners.
