Griffin High Athletics to Start Hall of Fame

Griffin, GA, August 8, 2017 –  Griffin High School has a long history of athletic excellence.  All over the state, Griffin is known as a traditional athletic powerhouse.  In an effort to recognize the positive contributions of Griffin High School athletics on the community, a Griffin High School Athletic Hall of Fame is being established to remember and celebrate excellence in athletic endeavors throughout our long history.

The first free, public Griffin High School was established in downtown Griffin in 1914.  Griffin’s athletic success began shortly after.  Highlights of the early years include a 99-0 football victory over Monticello on September 27, 1927.  There were originally two school districts in Spalding County.  Spalding High School (opened in 1929) operated for county students while those in the city of Griffin went to Griffin High School.  The two schools merged in 1953 when Griffin and Spalding County Schools merged.  Since the old Spalding High School became part of Griffin High School, we recognize their contributions as part of our shared history.  Even with two high schools in our county, athletic excellence was evident; in 1937, Griffin (9-0) and Spalding (8-0-1) tied for the North Georgia Interscholastic Conference Football Championship.  Football was not the only sport in which the schools excelled during these years.  Griffin High School won the 1940 Georgia High School golf championship.

Prior to the 1970 school year, schools in Griffin were segregated.  African-American students in Griffin attended Fairmont High School.  What became Fairmont was founded in 1929 after a grant from the Julius Rosenwald foundation built a school for African-American students in Griffin.  Fairmont High School was no stranger to athletic success.  NFL Hall of Famer Rayfield Wright and NFL player Marcus Stroud are both Fairmont alumni.

Our history is a vibrant and important part of what makes Griffin High School what it is today.  We are proud to recognize our past!

Nomination forms for the first class of the Griffin High School Athletic Hall of Fame can be picked up from the office at Griffin High School or downloaded from the Griffin High School Athletics webpage (  Initial nominations should be returned to the school before August 20th.  The initial class will be recognized at the October 13th football game against Fayette County High School.  Questions about nominations should be directed towards GHS Athletic Director Dr. Kennedy Holt.
