Griffin High Soccer Recognized for Academic Excellence for Fourth Consecutive Year

For the fourth year in a row, the Griffin High School Lady Bears soccer team received the United Soccer Coaches High School Team Academic Award.  The Lady Bears were one of only 7 women’s soccer teams recognized out of the 390 GHSA-affiliated teams in Georgia.  “We are very proud of our girls soccer team for again receiving this prestigious academic award,” said Dr. Darrell Evans, principal of Griffin High School, “The girls soccer team is an exemplary representation of what it means to be student-athletes.  Successes like these helped our graduation rate improve to 87%, higher than the state average.  Good job, Lady Bears!”

The Lady Bears were recognized with this prestigious award for having an outstanding grade point average during the 2016 spring season.  The 19 members of the varsity team had a combined 3.39 GPA.  Griffin High Athletic Director Dr. Kennedy Holt praised the team’s commitment to success in the classroom, saying the school is “extremely proud of our girls’ academic performance.  In keeping with our school’s theme, ‘Striving Towards Excellence,’  these young ladies have demonstrated that academic achievement at Griffin High School is our student-athletes’ number one goal.”

The Lady Bears have also found success on the field recently, finishing in the top half of their region four out of the past five years.  During that five-year stretch, 10 Lady Bears have received college scholarship offers and seven Lady Bears have played collegiately.  “Our girls are leaders.  They are successful on the field and in the classroom,” said Head Coach Bill Stikes, “You’ll find them in leadership positions in school clubs, other sports, and in churches and other community organizations.  Being a Lady Bear means committing to success on the field and in life.”

The Lady Bears open their 2018 season with a scrimmage February 1st at Memorial Stadium.
