Tyler Hendrix Wins Gold Medal at SkillsUSA State Competition

During the SkillsUSA State competition, March 15-17, 2012, Griffin High School students represented their school very well through their professionalism and skills.  Griffin High School had two-students to compete.  Stanley Laster competed in Masonry along with twenty-seven other contestants/schools, and Tyler Hendrix competed in Carpentry along with twenty-three other contestants/schools.  Laster did not place in Masonry but based on my professional opinion he was in the top five.  Tyler Hendrix, 1st Place, Gold Medal winner will go on to compete in the 48th Annual National Leadership and Skills Conference, Saturday, June 23 – Wednesday, June 27, 2012 in Kansas City, Missouri.

After the awards ceremony, Tyler received some very nice carpentry tools, and he stated to Mr. Preston, “This is the first time I have won something like this; I am the best carpenter in the state of Georgia.”  Mr. Preston stated, “Yes you are and you will go on to represent the state of Georgia at the Nationals in Kansas City, Missouri.”  If you have seen the look on this young mans face you will realize why I do what I do.  I love my job.  Tyler’s final remark to me was how can I afford to eat for a whole week in Kansas City.  He was told not to worry about that.
